James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was born in Illinois in 1837. After moving to Kansas as a young man, he served briefly as constable. Later, after serving as a Union scout during the civil war, Hickok became a professional gambler. Subsequently, he was sherrif of Hays City and Abilene, Kansas where he killed four men in the line of duty. Wild Bill worked for a time in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show as one of the head-liners. By 1876, he was plagued by eye trouble and his career was going downhill. He started to gamble more and drink heavily. While in the midst of a poker game in Deadwood, Dakota territory, a saddle tramp, Jack McCall, snuck up behind Wild Bill and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
